In April 2012, members of the Playhouse District Association (PDA) began evaluating placemaking initiatives to create community spaces and enhance the quality of life for the 50,000+ residents, workers and students within ½-mile of the intersection of Colorado and El Molino.
Later that year, a Parklets Pilot Committee was formed and we have met monthly ever since: studying comparable projects, planning, and exploring the perspectives of Locations, Design/Construction/Maintenance, Financial Model, Regulatory Processes and Community Engagement.
In June of the following year (2013), staff from Pasadena’s City Manager’s Office, Planning and Community Development Department, City Attorney’s Office, the Public Works Department and the Transportation Department joined the initiative to help guide feasibility from the City’s perspective.
Throughout this process, we have engaged in numerous conversations with stakeholders and presentations to City of Pasadena Commissions, City Council District Meetings and community organizations.
